Based on a recent survey of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Big Bend members:
- 60% experienced improvement in their academic achievement
- 80% saw improvement in their study skills
- 90% of new members increased their homework time to eight or more hours per week
- 84% significantly improved their basic computer skills
- 60% demonstrated an understanding of practical banking concepts
- 90% of parents/guardians reported that members’ overall behavior had improved
- 73% reported improvement in artistic and music ability
- 100% increased knowledge of good nutrition and eating habits
- 79% of members reached Healthy Fitness Zone levels on three or more items
In addition, a recent study by the Rose Institute on State and Local Government found that for every $1 invested in after-school programs like the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Big Bend, taxpayers save $3 by reducing juvenile arrests, incarceration, grade repetition and other costs to society.
Statewide Impact
According to a 2007 study conducted by Florida Tax Watch, Florida Boys & Girls Clubs save taxpayers millions of dollars in costs associated with high school drop-outs and juvenile offenders. Boys & Girls Club members throughout the state are:
- More likely to graduate high school
- Less likely to commit truancy and other more serious crimes
- Less likely to experience teenage pregnancy
- Less likely to require government-provided healthcare in the future
National Impact
According to a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive:
- 90% of Boys & Girls Clubs alumni nationwide graduate high school
- 75% are actively involved in their communities
- 57% said the Club saved their life
In the same study, Boys and Girls Clubs alumni said that Club staff:
- Helped them learn right from wrong (85%)
- Boosted their self-confidence (82%)
- Enhanced their ability to avoid trouble with the law (67%)
